Copper Tubing Used in Older Models Susceptible to Corrosion
A customer called to tell us that her five-year-old unit was not cooling sufficiently. She figured it needed refrigerant.
We came to her home and added the refrigerant to the unit, but we also checked for leaks in her system. It is very unusual for an air conditioning system of that age to need a refrigerant charge so soon without having some sort of serious leak.
In some instances, the copper tubing used in many models can be corroded due to acid, resulting in tiny pinholes through which refrigerant can leak. One of the reasons this acid forms is the presence of formaldehyde, which is present in small amounts in many homes.
If you purchase a new model, try to find one with aluminum coils instead of copper, because aluminum is more resistant to acid formation.
