Your Older Unit Could Be Running Out of Freon
We responded to a call regarding an air conditioning unit that was at least 20 years old. It turned on and air blew out, but it was not cold enough. We added some Freon and the air conditioner worked fine afterward.
Freon is being phased out of newer models but is still legal to use in older ones – provided, of course, that a licensed technician is the one who is refilling it. A lack of Freon in your system is just one problem that could occur of the course of its life, though.
Common Air Conditioner Problems
- No power: This is a relatively simple issue – your air conditioner isn’t turning on. Check to make sure power is reaching the unit. You could have a blown fuse or a tripped circuit.
- Blocked condenser: If you have an outdoor unit, debris or foliage could be blocking the condenser, causing it not to work properly.
- Dirty air filter: This will reduce your air conditioner’s air flow and damage the unit. It is suggested that you check and change your air filter once a month.
- Incorrectly sized unit: If your AC is too large or too small, it will probably short cycle and not cool appropriately.
- Thermostat set too high: Another simple idea, yet it happens all the time. Make sure you didn’t set your thermostat too high for the temperature you want. Try turning it down five degrees and see if it helps.
- Dirty evaporator or condensor coils: While this isn’t something you can directly see, it is something you can control. Having annual maintenance on your system will prevent them from getting dirty, resulting in an air conditioner you can rely on.
