Busting Myths About Your HVAC System

Myth Busting HVAC

When it comes to heating and cooling your home, your HVAC system is working hard all year round. As a homeowner, you’re always looking for ways to make your HVAC system work to its fullest potential. There are so many HVAC system myths out there that are wrong. We are here to set you straight!

Myth: You only need to do maintenance on your HVAC system when it breaks.

Busted: This could not be further from the truth! Regular maintenance for your HVAC system is integral to the quality and lifespan of your system. Think of your HVAC system as a person. To stay healthy, people visit their doctors on a semi-regular basis for check-ups to make sure that there is nothing wrong. If there is, the doctor can step in to treat the problem. This is the same for your HVAC. Just because they’re durable systems does not mean that their parts work perfectly in the long run. By having them maintenance, your HVAC technician can determine if any parts need to be replaced, lubricated or cleaned before they break and cause a greater problem. By doing routine maintenance, you will optimize the efficiency of your system and lengthen its lifespan.

Myth: You don’t need to change your air filter that often.

Busted: This could not be further from the truth! Air filters should be changed out periodically to enable your HVAC system to work at its fullest capacity. Think about what a dirty air filter looks like. All that dust that collects in the filter is inhibiting the air to flow through. The dirtier the filter, the harder the system has to work to push through clean, comfortable air for your home. In some extreme cases, making the blower or fan work harder can even cause the A/C to freeze up!

Filters should be changed out more often than regularly scheduled maintenance. They should be changed out every 30-90 days. Don’t wait for your next maintenance for the technician to do the switch! The more often you change your filters, the less it will likely cost you in the long run.

Myth: Bigger HVAC systems cool your house better.

Busted: A properly-sized unit for your home is key! Bigger does not mean that the system will work any faster or more efficiently. In fact, what’s important when choosing an HVAC system for your home is a few factors: (1) the number of windows your home has, (2) the insulation level, and (3) the amount of space that you are looking to heat and/or cool. Properly-sized systems are what matters most. Systems that are too big for a home can actually cause more problems than you may realize, such as high humidity leading to mold due to the system turning on and off more often, poor air distribution, and dust leakage and noise from the ductwork as well as higher utility bills for years to come!  Why pay for HVAC repair services when you don’t have to? Get the proper size HVAC unit for your home.  Bigger is NOT better in this case!

We hope that we’ve busted some of the myths you’ve heard over the years!
