Ductless Heating & Cooling: The Pros and Cons

ductless heating

When choosing a heating and cooling system that is right for your home, it’s important to know all of your options and which will best serve your particular home. Homeowners can choose between a central air system (HVAC) or a ductless mini-split system.  While not as commonly considered as central air, ductless mini-split systems are not only super-efficient but can also provide a more customized level of comfort when it comes to the temperature in your home. Intrigued? We thought so. Let’s take a look at having a ductless system installed in your home.

Pros of Ductless Mini-Splits:

  1. Right Temperature For Every Space

Mini-split systems enable each individual room or certain zones in the home to be a particular temperature. This allows everyone living in the home to have the temperature they prefer wherever they may be throughout the house (which means no more fighting over the thermostat).

     2. Energy Efficient

By focusing on zones that you will be using at certain times, you are not wasting hot or cold air while the room is not being used. Since the system is concentrating on a smaller space, this is a more energy-efficient option as less power is needed to heat or cool an entire house.

     3. Easy Installation

When a mini-split system is installed, there is very little construction needed. This is not the case for a central air system installation because ducts must be installed within the structure of your house.

     4. Security

One of the benefits of installing a ductless mini-split is that they only require a very small hole in the wall, as opposed to window units that are a much larger and easier space for an intruder to get inside.

     5. Versatility In Design

These systems have evolved over the years to integrate within a space not only for efficiency but also for aesthetics. They can be hung from the ceiling, mounted on a wall, or appear flush in a ceiling if there is a drop ceiling.

Cons of Ductless Mini-Splits:

  1. Appearance

Upon entering a room, a mini-split system can stand out if the only option is to place them on the wall. They only come in two basic colors, so depending on the color or your walls, their visibility is greater.

     2. Installation Is Very Important

You must have an experienced contractor do the installation. Making sure that the unit is positioned correctly in the space is critical in order to maximize its functionality. If the mini-split system is not installed correctly, it can end up costing the homeowner a lot more in the long run because it may cause a “short-cycle”, which does not provide an accurate temperature control and wastes energy.

     3. Finance

Ductless mini-split systems can end up costing the homeowner about 30% more on their initial investment. Although it can make sense financially over time, there is a higher cost to purchase each system and have them installed.

     4. Drainage

These systems need to be drained every so often and they need to be drained by a company that is knowledgeable on how to do this correctly! It is imperative that you chose the right company with experience in handling mini-split systems so that you can ensure the purpose of their existence is taking place.
