Understanding Dual-Fuel Hybrid HVAC Systems

Dual-Fuel Hybrid HVAC Systems

Trying to decide on the type of heating system that makes the most sense for your home? There are a few options to consider and the right one can depend on certain factors that are particular to your own home or business.

An all-natural gas furnace, an electric heat pump, or a dual-fuel heat pump are the most common options on the market today. Each system has its own benefits and drawbacks. A dual-fuel heating system is known to be the most energy-efficient option because it capitalizes on the positive attributes of the all-natural gas furnace and electric heat pump, combining into a system that uses electricity when the weather is generally above 40 degrees and natural-gas when it drops to below 40 degrees. The purpose of dual-fuel heat is to maximize the efficiency of the other two systems mentioned to provide optimal comfort.

How Technology Has Affected HVAC

Over the years, fracking has made it less expensive to use natural gas, which in turn has made natural gas heating more affordable now than it has been in years. Technology has also impacted electric heating systems as well. New heating systems do not cause  “supplemental,” “resistance,” or “strip” heat laying waste as they had in the past, which caused utility bills to rise.

For these reasons, it really depends on the space that you are looking to heat when you are determining what is the best system for you. If you already have gas lines built into space, natural-gas heat may be the way to go. If you do not have gas lines installed and a heat pump was in place, replacing it with a new electric heat pump system also could be the best option for you.

Consider Your Personal Comfort

Each system offers different air conditions in your home. Natural-gas heat produces hot air that can leave your skin feeling dry, while electric heat from a heat pump blows air that is not as hot as natural gas, which can feel cooler to the skin due to the fact that your body temperature is higher than the air being pumped out. Dual-fuel heat may just be the “in-between” option that makes the most sense for your home or business as the dual-fuel heat pump does optimize the benefits of each. Each system has different characteristics that affect how the home feels.

There are lots of things to think about when making the decision on which system to go with. Over the years, the technology and developments in each system really have made all of the options available more efficient. What matters most is how your home or business is currently set up and how it affects you personally.
