Flickering Lights in Cherry Hill, NJ

Constant Flickering Probably Means Electrical Repairs Are Needed

A customer said that a utility company came out to her home to confirm a wiring problem. However, since he is not authorized to perform in-home repairs he told her she would have to call an electrician. She told us not only did her lights continually flicker, her breakers were also tripping too often. We upgraded her electrical panel and the problem was eliminated.
Is it always as serious as an out-of-date or broken electrical panel? Nope! Here are some of the other common causes of flickering lights that you should be aware of:

  1. The most basic cause of flickering lights is a loose bulb in the socket. To fix that, turn the light off and tighten the bulb. If the lights still flicker afterwards, you know the issues lies elsewhere.
  2. Another possible cause is a worn out light switch. Over time, switches can wear out, causing the lights to flicker. You can determine if that is the reason by jiggling it gently to see if it induces a flicker. Also check the plug where it connects with the outlet to make sure it fits perfectly in there. If the switch is the problem, you will have to replace it.
  3. If you notice that your lights only flicker when a high-wattage appliance – like a refrigerator – turns on, then you don’t have anything to worry about. It’s normal for lights to flicker when major appliances start up. However, if it happens more often and the above two things did not fix it, you could have a more serious electrical issue going on.

If you have rust or corrosion on your panel or circuit breakers, they are constantly tripping, or you want to add more circuits, call Raynor Services as soon as you can. We will quickly provide you with an upgrade that will be able to handle all of your home’s appliances and electronics, and stop your lights from flickering.
