Whole House Electrical System Grounding Trenton

Protect Your Home and Your Family With a Grounded Electrical System

At Raynor Services, we are often answering the same types of customer questions, the biggest one being: How can proper grounding of a home’s electrical wiring make my home safer?
While we never mind informing our customers, we thought it’d be a great idea to help out a whole bunch at once with a single blog post. So, the answer is that a grounded system channels excess electricity safely into the ground, even if there were an electrical malfunction. Proper grounding eliminates the risk of electrocution and protects your home’s electronics from permanent damage.

How Does Electrical System Grounding Work?

If the electrical system has a grounding device such as a “ground wire,” a metal casing around the wires, or some other device that routes excess electricity into the ground when the system malfunctions, then it’s considered grounded.

How Can You Tell if Your Electrical System is Grounded?

There’s really no way to tell just by looking at your electrical wiring, outlets, or panel, which is why you call Raynor Services. We have plenty of trained, licensed technicians on staff ready to determine if your home is grounded.
Word of advice: Don’t assume your house is grounded simply because you have three-pronged outlets installed. If the last owner of your home was a do-it-yourselfer, they may have installed these outlets without grounding them.
In addition, it’s always a good idea to have your system inspected after a while anyway because time wears out the wiring and they can become ungrounded with years of use.

Protections Provided by Grounding

  • Protect Your Family from Electrocution: Keep in mind that electricity will travel the path of least resistance. This means then, for example, if a toaster breaks, the electricity will flow through the metal outside of the toaster, potentially shocking whoever comes in contact with it. But with a grounded electrical system, if the toaster is plugged in to a three-prong outlet, the electricity will not be able to flow outside of the appliance. Instead, it will flow through the third pron and into the ground without hurting anyone – or any thing!
  • Protect Your Electronics from Damage: Without grounding, electrical charges build up in wiring and cause continuous damage to your electronics. This long-term damage can shorten the lives of computers, phones, entertainment systems, ovens, microwaves, refrigerators, and other appliances.
