Hello, Spring…and Allergies: Here are Three Allergen-Reducing Steps to Take This Spring

spring allergiesBright green grass, gorgeous flowers, warmer weather — spring certainly comes with a lot of perks, but with all of these spring elements can also come seasonal allergies. If you or someone in your home tends to suffer during this time of year, we have good news: there are allergen-reducing steps you can take this spring! The Raynor Services team is here with three tips to help reduce allergens and improve indoor air quality in your home, so you can breathe easier and feel healthier.

Freshen Up the Air with High-Quality Filters
The filters in your furnace play an important role in keeping your home’s air healthy and free of the particles that can often lead to allergies. However, when a furnace filter is dirty, it is not able to properly trap debris — not only does this mean that your system won’t be as efficient as it can be, but it also means that more dust is floating around in your home. To avoid this, be sure to check your furnace filters about every three months, and when you do replace them, opt for ones that have a MERV 8 rating — this enables them to trap more allergen-causing particles.

Make Breathing Easy-Breezy By Checking for Mold
When mold is growing in a home, it may not be seen right away, but the impact it can have on a person’s health is felt. Mold allergy symptoms include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Asthma
  • Nose bleeds
  • Congestion
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Sore throat

Because mold thrives in humid areas, be sure to schedule regular air duct cleaning appointments. If you see mold — or any of the above mold allergy symptoms are being experienced by you or someone in your home — you should schedule a UV light installation appointment with an HVAC professional. These lights are placed inside of ductwork, and because UV lights kill mold, you can rest easy knowing that your home’s air quality is safe and healthy.

Help Healthy Air Flourish By Dusting HVAC Vents
Although dusting a home is part of most homeowners’ weekly routines, the HVAC equipment is often overlooked, especially the air conditioning vents. However, just like any other part of your home, dust can quickly accumulate on these vents, and when the AC turns on and blows air out through these dusty vents, you’re now breathing that air. Here’s how to clean air conditioner vents:

  • Dampen a rag — this will help prevent dust from kicking up into your face
  • Clean these vents — just be sure to dust them before other areas of your home
  • Remember to include them in your weekly dusting routine from here on out!

Now that you know these three allergen-reducing steps to take this spring, we hope your indoor air quality drastically improves this season!
