Finding the right humidification for your home’s HVAC system is essential when it comes to enhancing the air quality in your home. During these cold winter months, the air becomes very dry, causing a lack of moisture in the air within your home. This can lead to dry skin, allergy or respiratory symptoms, and nasal congestion. Even in the hot summer months, certain dehumidifiers can be used to combat dryness caused by air conditioning and improve your indoor air quality!

There are a variety of humidification systems that have unique functions and benefits. So how do you know how to choose the humidifier or dehumidifier that addresses your air quality needs?

How to choose your humidifier:

Humidifiers, commonly used in these cold winter months, work to increase the moisture in the air of your home. Below is a list of humidifiers to choose from:

Evaporative Humidifier: Evaporative humidifiers are easy to clean and require little energy use, however, they must be regularly replaced and can sometimes produce a noticeable noise. These common systems use a built-in fan to distribute moisture from a wick filter made of paper that is submerged in water to increase humidity.

Floor Vent Humidifier: Installed into the space where floor vent registers typically go, these humidifiers hold liquid that passes through a filter and eventually into your home’s air during the heating system. Floor vent humidifiers use no energy and are extremely portable. They’re specifically applicable for single rooms and small spaces.

Furnace-Mounted Humidifier: These units connect directly to your home’s water supply. They incorporate a foam element that your air cycles through, adding moisture and distributing throughout the entire house.

Ultrasonic Humidifier: These humidifiers create minuscule water droplets that are propelled into your air from a built-in fan. In contrast to other humidifiers, ultrasonic systems tend to be silent, so you aren’t distracting when working from home! Preferably use distilled or filtered water with these units to avoid white dust.

How to choose your dehumidifier:

Dehumidifiers are used in contrast to decrease the amount of humidity inside a home, traditionally in the summer season. Too much humidity can cause increased moisture, which can lead to mold growth, furniture warping, and even insect infestation. We don’t want you dealing with bugs or mold, so here are some great dehumidifier options to make sure your air is clean when you escape the heat!

Refrigeration Dehumidifier: Coils inside this unit cool the humid air that passes through, condensing the moisture. Inside these dehumidifiers, there is a basin used to collect the excess water, which does need to be checked and manually emptied regularly. Refrigeration-based dehumidification is the most economical option when dealing with high temperatures and high moisture levels.

Desiccant Dehumidifier: These systems absorb water from the air using an absorbent material known as desiccants. A rotating wheel passes through streams of warm air and drives off moisture. Desiccant dehumidifiers are typically smaller and more portable than refrigerants, making them a great fit for smaller spaces!
