Perform a ‘Tissue Test’ to See if Your Fan is Working Properly

If you have a problem with your bathroom exhaust fan, you could have issues because moisture isn’t being taken out. When this occurs, fixtures can rust and mold and mildew can form. If you see an excessive amount of moisture on your mirrors and walls, then you may need to have your fan replaced. Try these troubleshooting steps and then call a professional if they don’t work.

  1. Turn on the fan and hold a piece of toilet paper over the grill. If the fan is working correctly it will tightly grasp the paper.
  2. If this doesn’t happen, you may have a problem with a blockage in the duct that connects to the fan. Take off the grill and use a duct cleaning brush to try and find and remove the clog.
  3. Make sure that you don’t use anything with sharp edges because that could tear a hole in the duct.
  4. Once you’ve found the clog and removed it, do the “tissue test” again.

If your fan still isn’t working correctly, make sure is connected securely to the duct. Then, check the vent hood flapper to see if it’s jammed. The fan could be working fine but you’ll still have moisture if it is too small for the bathroom.
Call Raynor today and we’ll let you know if your bathroom exhaust fan can be repaired or it needs to be replaced.
